Hi-Fi Rush Critique - A Nostalgic Blast
A critique and analysis of Hi-Fi Rush, one of my favorite games of last year.

Just a quick note - I started working on this before it was announced that Tango got shut down. I considered ammending things in light of the announcement, but I felt that most (if not all) of the things I talked about still made sense since my goal was to just cover the game and not any industry-related happenings around it, so I left everything as-is. Just mentioning it in case anything I say seems weird or out-of-place knowing that Tango is no more.
RIP Tango :(

    My problem with the delayed attacks is that Elden Ring has some really bad input lag, so you end up needing to predict the enemy’s attack in order to dodge it effectively. That’s hard when the timing is unnatural.

    Elden Ring punishes you for exploring. It might be the only open world game to do that. You went to that area too early, too bad now you missed several quests and items, oh no you rested at that site of grace more content locked. The game is absolutely awful to play after you learn how much content you miss simply by entering some place too early. Contrast this to Breath of the Wild which has ZERO missable things...ZERO!

    Elden Ring's bosses feel like real time QTE simulators. Some of the older games had difficult and aggressive bosses that also didn't feel so lazy in their design. Personally, Elden Ring does have some of the most fun Fromsoft bosses, but they also easily have the worst.

    I'm not sure if the the input-buffering was better before Elden Ring. I just finished DS3 a week ago before finally beating Malenia (yes, it took me 2 years to defeat that nasty hag) - and I noticed that input-buffering in DS3 was as atrocious as it is in Elden Ring. It was exceptionally painful during the Dancer and Friede fights. I think receiving a hit that staggers you should clear your input buffer. And if it already does it - it definitely doesn't feel that way. Also - oh boy did Fromsoft go hard on the dlc bosses.

    Great critique. I honestly hate all of the bosses in the main game. Having played a lot of Sekiro and DS3. Messmer is the first boss in Elden Ring that feels very reminiscent of DS3. I don't know why, but they nailed the boss design for him and literally none of the others. Promised Consort Radahn isn't a souls boss. It's a Tekken boss. And you're stuck using an archaic combat system.

Such a positive and natural way to promote exploration in a beautiful open world. The problem is you can’t get away with get broken or strong builds as easily, so spiking the difficulty in the dlc really shows the flaws in the game, leading to many people being upset that it’s “too hard”.

    What I find really interesting is how much the evolution of Souls games mirrors what happened with the PS2 Armored Core titles. This gradual arms race of From vs the players. Staple weapons being nerfed until by the time we reach Last Raven, the signature Karasawa, a staple in Armored Core 2 and 3, isn't even worth equipping most of the time. Implementing systems like booster heat to reduce our mobility, the gradual removal of Human Plus, once a system given to the players who are failing, then made an unlockable post game challenge, finally fully removed from us, but not the AI. Giving them a distinct edge that we can't replicate. Much like how I don't enjoy playing Last Raven, not because it's a super hard game, it just feels bad because of how much has been stripped away from the player, Elden Ring's boss designs do something similar. I just beat the DLC, so many amazing weapons with great ashes of war were given to us, and it feels almost impossible to use any of them against the bosses in the DLC because of how aggressive they are. Commander Gaius in particular.

    Not tryna shit on you but like? This games bosses are really easy?? Souls games aren’t supposed to be “mind numbingly difficult” or “hard but fair” The game is totally easy, once you figure out how the weapon upgrading and damage scaling works. For me to have any difficulty completing this game, I intentionally did not level up my character. By the time your character is level 50, you can pretty much shit on any boss the game has. Souls games are just a puzzle, where you need to find out how to upgrade your shit and once you do the challenge pretty much falls apart. Like I said I’m not trying to shit on you but frankly it just seems like you’re not very good at videos games and it shows. That’s perfectly fine but please don’t claim the game is “overtuned” and “mind numbingly difficult” when you’re struggling to take down easy bosses with fully upgraded weapons and leveled up characters

      No one cares that you finished the DLC... You're argument amounts to 'I finished the DLC and therefore his criticisms are valid' which is pretty smooth brained. As I pointed out in another thread above there are absolutely issues with ER, just as there is with every Fromsoft game. However, this video doesn't address a lot of them and it's largely just whining. I don't like delayed attacks isn't criticism. It's an opinion, it's valid he's allowed to feel that way but this video lacks any real depth and he doesn't possess enough knowledge about the game to go into depth. Personally, I would argue that the delayed attacks are an integral part of the combat system and it would cease to properly function without them. A prime example is the final boss of the DLC... Maybe if people focused on criticizing things that are actually problems and giving constructive feedback instead of just bitching we wouldn't end up with awful encounters like the final DLC boss... Regardless whether you finished the DLC or how many times Matt finished the game his critique is lacking any depth and is just flagrantly incorrect in many areas.

    I know this video is subjective and all, but I find the delayed attacks to not be a problem? If not, dare i say, fun? Maybe im a small minority but they're really not that hard to dodge and it spices up the flow of boss fights making me have to think about when im dodging instead of spam dodging all the time. Sure, maybe the first or second time you see the attack its gunna be a little confusing to dodge, but thats like, what 5 minutes of gameplay until you understand when you should try to dodge? That and the moves that purposly hit you when you spam dodge, that feels like the game telling me "nu uh, you have to actually try to time these dodges, dont just spam a button." I dont wanna be the guy to say "skill issue" but if delayed attacks and spam dodge traps are still consistsntly getting you... I just wanna say, your insistence on not using summons is totally arbitrary and I think it really cheapens a lot of your complaints. They werent put in the game by accident. A lot of fromsoft criticism seems to treat summons like some sort of mistake the devs made and didnt catch, which is obviously false. These systems require deliberate work, the coding of unique friendly NPC AI behavior does not happen by accident. Similar things have been said about the entire magic systems, and even *shields*, in previous games. If a mechanic exists in the game, your decision not to use it makes it a self-imposed challenge run, not the "intended experience".

      The bosses are clearly designed to be one on one encounters given that the mimic largely trivializes many of the fights when used. • @reilynn7891
      @reilynn7891 День назад

      @@czarcasm5495 No, they aren't "clearly" designed to be one on one encounters. This is a two-hour video on all the design failures of these bosses. It seems like what these fights "are" is badly designed. If they really were trying to balance these boss fights around one-on-one combat then From Software's game designers are utterly incompetent, which I doubt. What they "should be" balanced around is a matter of subjective opinion and irrelevant to the reality of the game that was actually made. Also, I said "summon" not "mimic". The fact that an entire novel category of the game's design is reduced in the eyes of players to "mimic tear and nothing else" is actually part of the problem.

    • @czarcasm5495
      @czarcasm5495 День назад

      @@reilynn7891 you talk a lot about unique friendly ai behavior which is literally the same thing as the mimic tear. The only substantial difference is that summons increase the health of the boss. As for the bosses being designed to be one on one encounters… they literally are, I don’t honestly know what else to tell you. If they weren’t, the fights wouldn’t be so massively trivialized by the use of the mimic or summons, which are, despite what you seem weirdly hell bent on arguing, functionally the same thing. Fromsoftware isn’t incompetent… they just kinda messed up the balancing of Elden Ring, hence why many of the boss fights come down to either getting one shot regardless of vigor level, or simply using a summon/mimic to trivialize a fight designed (like all fromsoft bosses) to be fought one on one.

      @@czarcasm5495 npc summons were in previous souls games as well. Did fromsoft mess up the balancing of those games as well? I actually agree that fighting souls bosses solo is more fun and engaging than using summons, but if I am to accept the claim that these fights were designed for one-on-one fights, aka, using npc summons is *not intended*, then it makes no sense for Fromsoft to have done extra work to add an entire non-intended summoning system to all these games. To put it another way, the use of summons must have been considered in the game design, or else they wouldn't be in the game, right?

    • @czarcasm5495
      @czarcasm5495 13 часов назад

      @@reilynn7891 ok so we’re going in goddamn circles here. Like I said in every comment, the existence of summons/mimics has nothing to do with the quality of design or balancing in ANY game they are in. They have, however, always been seen as a way to dramatically lower the difficulty of any given boss, which for most people isn’t as enjoyable as doing the fight one on one, primarily because the boss AI is generally designed to engage with one entity at a time and a second target can cause it to leave itself completely open to attack at any given moment. It’s not that it isn’t intended to be used… it’s that bosses should be balanced so that an average player can reasonably be expected to beat a boss through trial and error. My favorite example of this would be either Owl from Sekiro or Midir from DS3. Your argument essentially comes down to “summons are in the game, therefore the game is balanced,” which is A) categorically false and B) absolutely irrelevant. Elden Ring is a game that attempts to emphasize player freedom and being forced into one tedious playstyle for every boss as a result of poor balancing and design certainly doesn’t sound like freedom to me. And if you can’t accept that the bosses are primarily designed to be fought one on one, meaning that you think summons/mimics are absolutely required for certain/all bosses, I am honestly not sure what to say to you.

      @@Meldr0p This is in Liurnia, you’re around level 40 here, this is early game. I am pretty sure you underestimating his vigor stat here regardless and looking at how much damage he takes on this boss, he’s not underleveled at all. Now, if you’d had watched the video before instantly leaving your comment and clicking off, you could maybe provide something actually meaningful to the table.
